I received a fellowship to go to Spain on sabbatical with the intent of spending the year. We initially were told that visas would be arranged in Spain, but have now found out that we have to apply in the US. My understanding is we need a resident visa without the requirement of a work authorization. After several go ‘rounds with the consulate in Houston, they told us we need FBI background checks. Our plans were to leave August 1, but it appears FBI background checks take 13 weeks. (These also require legalization by the state department which takes around 20 days or around $400 expedited.) It seems unlikely we’ll have our visas in time. I sent the fingerprint cards to the FBI May 2 with “deadline June 15” written on it. I’m not too hopeful. Anyone have any experience with how long this takes? I’ve also heard things are way backed up because all the newly hired census workers need FBI clearance. Crazy.
