Fraud with what looks like Ministry of Education cultural assistant positions

My husband and I were just swindled out of approximately $4,000; we have no home, no jobs, and little dignity. ESL employment.com had a position that turned out to be a scam, but it looks credible. The scammer uses some of the logos in e-mail correspondence that appear on the actual Spanish Ministry of Education site. We paid money to an “immigration attorney” for our visas, and to a “travel agent” for bogus flights. We doubt that we will recoup any of our money, even though a family member works for an individual running for the Ohio Attorney General, whose staff is assiting us with this. Watch out for this—we alerted ESL employment.com; we hope that no one else falls victim to this.

Protect Yourself from Fraud The Western Union Money Transfer service is a great way to send money to people you know and trust. If you need to send money to someone you don?t know well, you may be putting yourself at risk to become a victim of online fraud.

Because we care about our consumers, Western Union urges you to protect yourself from fraud by considering the following:

  * Never send money to a stranger using a money transfer service.
  * Beware of deals or opportunities that seem too good to be true.
  * Don?t use money transfer services to pay for things like online auction purchases.
  * Never send money to pay for taxes or fees on foreign lottery winnings.

If you think you have been a victim of fraud, please contact your local Western Union Agent.

You are NOT the only one.
Here is the legitimate website: http://www.mepsyd.es/exterior/usa/en/programs/us_assistants/default.shtml
They say: “Please, promptly contact us if you are in any way asked to pay for any services in connection with this program.”
If you have not already done so, please contact the education office at: 1-202-728-2335
Maybe they can help you.

Also, here’s another forum topic about someone who has had this problem: http://www.expatriatecafe.com/forums/index.php/topic,2176.0.html I’ve sent a message to someone who has been through this same process to see if they’re willing to contact you.

Best of luck. I am VERY sorry that you have been swindled. Get in touch with the Education Office and I hope they can help too!

Take care.
