I am American but also hold a Latin American passport.  I know that by law if you are from a Latin American country, you only have to live in Spain legally for 2 years before you can become a citizen.

I would like to get a visa so that I can begin the process and hopefully get my spanish citzenship.

My question is, if I get a student visa and renew it after the year is up, do those two years in Spain on a student visa count towards the 2 years necessary to become a citizen or do you have to be on a work visa?

Also, with a student visa you can legally work I think 20 hours a week as long as it doesn’t interfere with your studies, if I work legally there will on my student visa, will that make a difference?

As far as the visa renewal process, if I am already living in Spain legally and plan to continue as a student for a second year, can I just renew the student visa from there?

muchogusto4,

when you enter spain with a student visa you must apply for a student card.
the student card is renewed by meeting requirements given at the comisar?a.
a student permit is not a resident permit.
to apply for citizenship you must either have a resident permit or resident/work permit.
