I have dual Spanish / US citizenship (gained Spanish citizenship from my mother’s side). I’ve worked in Spain, but recently I’ve been thinking of going back to the US. I’m worried about the following:

* Although I didn’t come close to making 80,000 dollars, I haven’t filed the latest taxes yet. Since I didn’t owe anything, I hope late filling doesn’t come back to haunt me. I’m also unsure what conversion rate to apply to my income, since it has varied drastically for the past year. In regards to Spain, I’ve kept up with the Declaraci?n de Renta.

* I don’t have a US driver’s license. I have a passport and my social security card, but I’m not sure about any problems I may encounter when trying to find a place of residency. There’s also the requirements for a rent, which includes a credit rating check ... In terms of credit, I’m probably in good standing here in Spain, but in the US I don’t really have much of a history. I was thinking of going to the US embassy and / or e-mailing them, but I’m not sure what to expect, specially given my circumstances.

Has anyone faced any of these problems? Has anyone faced any problems communicating with the US embassy about it? I could use some pointers on how to move ahead with it, if it’s possible.

Usually a passport suffices for official ID where it counts.  You can also use it to get a state-issued ID card in most states which is the same as a DL for official identification purposes.
