Here in the states I have one verizon account using a USB connected broadband device. It’s quite convenient while traveling or even when as close as my mother’s house where she has no internet service.

I’ll be in Barcelona and the surrounding areas this spring and this kind of setup appears like it would serve my needs while traveling outside Barca.

Thanks in advance for your help.  Maria

Pay as you go broadband is available over here via 3 main providers, movistar, orange and vodafone. (There are others but these are the main providers).

System uses a USB dongle and a Wifi network.

Depending on where you are the service may be a little patchy. In some rural areas there is no 3G coverage so the system wont work.

Note that such a device will only work in Spain. Your Verizon dongle will not work over here.

Links to main providers websites…(all are in Spanish….)

Hope this helps.

Thanks Foxbat. After I posted the question, it dawned on me to use the search button…sorry about that and I’ll remember to try it first with future questions.

A couple of threads here revealed that some folk have had mixed results with Vodafone and their customer service. Same with Iberbanda but apparently that has improved, according to a 2010 update by one poster.

I had an unusual bout of insomnia last night and did a bunch of surfing which revealed this company, Simyo owned by orange and Yoigo.  Anyone here have experience with these?

Do you know of a particular company that folk here seem to feel generally satisfied with?

One concern is that one can’t use skype with some of them.  It was one significant way I was going to keep in contact with some folk back in the states.

Also, do these major carriers have kiosks at the airport? If so, do you know if deals/prices differ there compared to going to one of their stores in town? Ideally, I’d land in BCN and get a spain cell and broadband to go before I get to my destination where I know they won’t have internet access for the guests.

Thanks!
