Non-EU airports - just Madrid & Barcelona?

An important aspect of choosing where to live to me is airport routing.

I’m using the Skyscanner.net map to hover over airports looking for direct routing. What I’m finding is that it’s only really Barcelona and Madrid going direct to places like Singapore, West Africa, and Latin America.

Did I miss anything?

I prefer to live on the north coast. We love San Sebastian. But I’m used to having Southampton as my local airport with heathrow not much further. I’m wondering how I’d get sent from my workplace if San Sebastian was my local airport if I had to fly to Australia or South America.

No I don’t think you have missed anything Madrid and Barcelona are Spain’s main hub airports for long distance destinations so you would have to journey to either of these for international destinations.

Hi j…

Haven’t looked into this very closely as yet but from San Sebastian to truly International destinations you are absolutely correct in your assumption that only Madrid or Barcelona offer direct routings…

However, Santander and Bilbao airports both offer regular flights (Iberia mainly) to Madrid and Barcelona for onward connections worldwide. Madrid is the preferred international hub.

Check out http://www.aena.es/csee/Satellite/Home/en/ and search Airports for who flies where and when…

Madrid and Barcelona are the major international hubs. However Barajas is a reasonably good airport, and compared to Heathrow, transferring is fairly easy. I use it a lot for flights from the UK to Cairo rather than go through London. As such, as long as your local airport has decent links to Madrid I wouldn’t worry too much unless you are literally going to be using it all the time.
