I became 65 at the end of September. I have the necessary UK S1 form to register with Social Seguridad which entitles me to the same medical cover in Spain as a Spanish national under the Spanish state run health scheme.

I have been offered some part time consultancy work by a Spanish company on an autonomo basis.

Whilst I appreciate that I will have to pay taxes, I have read on this website that I will be exempt from paying any social security contributions because I’m over 65 years. But when I check the official Seguridad Social website, its states that I must also have paid into the Spanish social security system for 35 years or more.

Surely, under EU legislation, my 46 years UK National Insurance contributions are transferable to Spain otherwise I wouldnt be entitled to the medical cover in Spain mentioned above.

Its a nonsense to have to contribute to the spanish social security system around 250 euros monthly for autonomo status when I’m already getting “free” health cover here in Spain anyway.

Any guidance would very much appreciated.
