Hi Paul

1) no you don’t need one, but they are very very useful, they get stuff done far quicker and they are not expensive.
2) that depends on your business.
3) Gestor can do it.
4) Use the Gestor, for most things, many have accountants within there business and can do your returns etc.

The Gestor system compared to the UK is far far better, although they do tend to operate on a friendly bases, you may need to do favours in return, but you can also get business through them, also the amount you turnover will determine how much attention you’ll get.

Running a business in Spain without one and not knowing the system backwards would be very hard and frustrating.

Hi,

About becoming autonomo, at least in barcelona, you can ask for a meeting with SOC from the following website

http://www.oficinadetreball.gencat.cat/socweb/opencms/socweb_es/ciutadans/cita_previa_estrangers.html

and scroll down to “Modificaciones de las autorizaciones iniciales por cuenta ajena a cuenta propia”.  From there, you can find all the required documents you need to bring with you inorder to become an autonomo and also asking for the “cita previa”.

As to the “alta” of seguridad social, yes, you can go there yourself (or ask you gestor) to do so but you can only go there after you have become autonomo from the oficina de trabajo.

hope this helps.

A Gestor will help you get things done much quicker if you don’t know your way around the Spanish system.  If you want them to take care of filing your accounts etc please be careful who you choose.  Recommendation is a good way, find out as much as you can about what is involved and then make sure your chosen person does everything correctly and on time. I would ask for copies of all payments you make and all filings made.  I personally know so many people who have ended up with huge fines and often frozen bank accounts because papers were not filed correctly or on time.  many people who have stopped working have not de-registered witjh social security and remain liable for payments.  Often the mistake takes over a year to come to the notice of the authorities and by that time a whole year’s social security payments are due and more often than not you will have to pay.
