From my own observations I don’t think that the Spanish overall are into trends like we are in the UK nor are they into individual eccentricity. They are generally smart and conventional especially as they get older. I am nearly 30 and although I am a size 12 I can’t fit into anything in the “fashion” shops apart from Zara but sometimes even a large in a t shirt is way too tight so I guess they aren’t targeting me.

Hi,
I tend to agree with you. My partner who is fairly fashion conscious enjoys living in Spain as there doesn’t seem to be the same peer pressure regarding being up to the latest fashion trend or designer gear as there is in the U.K. Young people in Spain tend to wear what is smart and comfortable, especially in the more rural areas. It is different in Malaga, Marbella etc but the fashion conscious do tend to be the British.
In Barcelona I find it to be both the same and different.
Indeed women’s clothes (and men’s too! Perfect for me!) fit more snuggly (as in more snug, not like a stuffed-animal 😉 ). Generally people are more fashion conscious, particularly fit conscious, and look good most of the time. However, by fashion conscious I don’t mean trend conscious (although they can be that too). There’s a lot of individualism, especially among the younger, hipper, anarchic crowds.
Then again it’s home to H&M… what does that say? 😊
Wait, did I just talk in a circle or am I being clear?
Actually now you come to mention it when I went to Barcelona, I noticed that young people were really funky eclectic. You’ve given me an idea for next winter, I’m going to buy men’s jumpers. What a good idea. Thanks!

As everything, it depends on what you mean when you say fashionable. Are we talking fashion victims or are we talking trend-setters? If fashion victims then every major city has them. They are 16 - 35, affluent and well traveled. Trend-setters is a different issue and I don?t believe you find very many in Spain. Some in Madrid, some in Barcelona and that?s about it.
I think Zara is the ultimate trend setter in Madrid at least..
Latest trend is the one side off shoulder cut for women (garrrr they just drag one side off the shoulder regardless of the cut and if the top is really made to be off shoulder.. lol).
In the business world, EVERY WOMAN looks similar, all with Zara clothing, Mango dresses, and spots a Bimba and Lola bag. I haven?t seen much variation.. age range probably 18-35. Probably 1 in 2 over 28s have a Bimba and Lola bag.
As for men, they all have H&M shirts… the amount of double ups is astounding…
Honestly, I think the trend is rather conservative here, and there?s not much choice in Spain. Not a lot of individualism neither…
But actually to add… from the aunts and women of my man?s family (spanish), they seem to be more fashionable than the youth, and I have seen quite a lot of elegant mature women in Madrid. So I think i?ll go with the age 40-60 women are the ones with more flair for fashion than the younger ones. The reason is probably because they have more money to spend on clothing and accessories.
The younger ones (with the crisis, lack of jobs, and all) settle for affordable brands like Zara, Mango, etc. I think that makes sense?
Buy a copy of ‘Hola’ and see what they are wearing 😉
Guessing Zara, Mango etc is the best indication you will get of high street fashion.
Marbella, Puerto Banus for designer clothes. Maybe only the older ones can afford that?
I just love that most Spaniards dress smart no matter their age. (I sure notice the difference when I go for hols to the UK.
Jeans and T shirts, not even designer ones, just baggy and faded. Most look like tramps…. insulting to tramps I think!)
^womaninspain….. thankfully we only have a need for a jumper down South a few weeks of the year!! 😉
But good idea.
(I do all my clothes shopping in Evans as they are a ‘Larger Ladies Size’) 😊
