Hi, I’d like to come back to this topic, if anyone can help.
My husband and I are UK citizens / BCN residents with NIEs and had a baby last year here in Spain. We’ve been told that in order to open a bank account for her we need to get her a NIE or DNI. So, I’ve collected her Spanish birth cert and her empadronimento…so now, the question is what do I do?
My work organized my NIE and my original tarjeta de residencia - so I’ve no idea, and asking spanish friends is making me wonder if the process is the same for non-Spanish.
So for the NIE / DNI do I make an apointment with the police and go with her cert and empadron.? or is there some other government building I need to go and queue in for 2 hours?!

I am taking a day off work to get this all done, so any advice would be most welcome, as I don’t want to find that I’ve wasted my time

This is a good story about getting an NIE

Hi Roet,  I?d just like to reassure you that my experience was nothing like the one in the story above!  I?m not saying that doesn?t happen, it obviously does, but it certainly wasn?t like that in my case and probably for many other people too.  I hope you manage to get it done hassle free!

roet,
since you are british citizens, your baby is also a british citizen.
first of all, you would need to get him/her a british passport.
eu citizens are no longer issued tarjetas de residencia, only a piece of paper certifying you are a resident.
so fill in the following and read the instructions on page 2 of the following forms
http://www.mir.es/SGACAVT/modelos/extranjeria/modelos_extranje/ex_14.pdf
http://www.mir.es/SGACAVT/modelos/extranjeria/modelos_extranje/ex_16.pdf
you can go to any comisar?a and ask which comisar?a handles this process.

Thanks - for the replies - the links to the forms is very useful
we already have her british birth cert and passport. I’ve also found the number for the Spanish Foreign office 93 520 1410 / 902 02 2222(between 9 - 5.30pm incase any one else needs it) who can help direct you towards either a local office for “extranjeros” or a police station which deals with the NIE requests.
For anyone else who might find this and want further details - I’ve found that you can request a copy of the spanish birth cert “literal” online, and if you call your local ajuntamento you should be able to get an updated copy of the empadronamiento sent out to you. (010 is the number if you are in catalunya).
