Hi folks

my name is Gary, my wife IS Ang and we have 2 children Aaron and Ellie. We moved to Tenerife 2 years ago but after 4 months with the kids settled in spanish school my wife couldnt settle.  We are slightly different to most who move as I work off shore and have a rota of 2 weeks on 3 weeks off so we wouldnt be looking for work. After moving to Tenerife we think we know some of the pitfalls but not all thats why we have come on here. We have our NIE and residentia for Tenerife does that work for Spain. We are looking to move at the end of this year…again…. now certain issues have been ironed out and were looking at Los Montesinos so if anyone on here lives there any info would be greatfully recieved. I obviously have lots more questions but have lots of time to ask…. but for now any help would be greatful….. cheers

I think your NIEs and Residencias are sorted, for life - so far as I know it wouldnt make any difference whether you are Canaries or mainland.

Good luck with the move and well done for not giving up on the dream!  There are plenty of knockers around who’ll tell you not to bother, but I reckon you’ve got to know what you want and why, then go for it!

I’m starting to give up on giving advice, I thought reverting to stating everything is a bed of roses in Spain on another site and ended up getting so insulted by the forum members I was told to leave.

I’m thinking of saying forget forums, there are some really odd ball nutters who google most of the advice and have never set foot in Spain, the amount of top dogs fighting for popularity is pathetic.

There are 350,000 Expats in the Costa Del Sol, if you add the amount of membership on forums it would total around 0.01% of the expats in Spain.

So not a balanced view.

I’ve come to this conclusion because I’m well into the Spanish culture, today my OH is in Bilbao for her grandmothers funeral and I’ll be there next week for the services they hold after the funeral.

You only learn Spain by being there, way up your personnel circumstances and make the judgement, don’t take advice, research in Spain and do your homework in Spain.

Hey Santi, just so you know, I’ve always appreciated reading your contrarian perspectives on here. You’re absolutely right about the validity of subjective advice (ie. should I or shouldn’t I do xyz?). That said, the logistics and bureaucracy of moving countries is more than daunting to most and I’m sure a bit of advice and encouragement does a lot of good to some. For Brits it’s pretty easy to pop down to Spain to check it out and get a feel for things. For those who have to cross oceans to visit, it’s understandable that they spend a bit more time googling and foruming before making any kind of leap or even a test flight.

Gary: sorry for hijacking your thread. I hope someone living in Los Montesinos pops by with their take on things. In my humble experience, anywhere in Spain is better than home. 😉
