Hi
I have recently moved to Denia with my husband and 2 daughters. I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on intergrating my eldest daughter who is 17 and stuggling being away from her friends in the UK. She had recently dropped out of her A levels just before moving (which helped prompt our move) and therefore isn?t going to school here but taking a year out.
As a result after 8 weeks here she hasn?t made any friends here and is almost ready to go back home.
She speaks a little Spanish but probably not enough yet to get a job.  I would appreciate any ideas.
Thanks in advance
Michelle

Can she go back to school? That’s where she’d meet peers/friends at that age. Too young for the bar, and indeed without Spanish it’s very difficult to get a job.

Hi

We haven’t actually moved out yet but are planning to come out at the beginning of Sep with our 3 children aged 12,13 and 16 so I dont know if I can help but we sort of were thinking of this sort of scenario for our kids.  We worry about the 16 year old the most as she will have to start her bachilerato without any real Spanish and we (and all the kids) want them to go to a Spanish State school.

What we said we would do if the 16 year old couldnt cope with the school was let her go to a language school to learn Spanish for a year.  This would help her to integrate and make friends and also to learn the language.  I would do is try to get her to integrate via hobbies or even some sort of work which as there is so much tourism in Denia where English is welcome I would think should be possible.

It is a very tough time for all of you I imagine but I really think that the first 6 months will be the worst and then you will all settle in.  I wish you loads of luck!

We are planning to move to the Els Poblets are which is near you but dont know much about the area.  What made you choose Denia?  Would you recommend it?  Also, would you be able to tell me what sort of school your younger one is going to and what made you choose it?  We have got provisional places at the IES in Ondara but it was the only one we saw and I would like to hear about alternatives (other than international).

Hope to hear from you - you never know perhaps your daughter and ours might end up being friends!!

Good luck

Hi

I just wondered how you are getting along now, and particularly how your daughter is doing?

My husband and the 3 children moved to Denia area a couple of weeks ago and we did have some big problems with our 16 year old getting into a school.  We will know on Monday if she can go to the school in Denia but if she does, she will go back a year which she didnt want to do having just completed all her GCSEs over here.

Emma is 16 and will need some friends so, if your daughter is still at a loose end why dont you PM me and perhaps they can meet up.

I am still stuck in the UK working out my notice and can’t wait to get out there to be with them all.

Hope all works out for you.

Regards
