I guess that depends on the type of account you’ve setup. You’ll probably need to check with your bank or see the documentation they’ve provided you about your account.

That’s not going to be super helpful, but without knowing exactly what type of account you have, with whom, and proceed to look it up on the Internet, I doubt someone might be able to help you.

Sorry!

There are bank charges in Spain even for putting money in! The amount depends (as per the other post) on your type of account and which bank you have opted for. Greater competition amongst banks (since the arrival of UK banks?) is helping the situation but shopping around pays especially where mortgages are concerned. Bottom line you cant beat the banks but its worth trying!

Hmm, I’ve never been charged for depositing money.

Jugs: Did you read the banks in Spain page? Some of the cajas keep very minimal charges and for regular transactions there are none (see Caja de Ingenieros or Caixa Catalunya).

Robi: You’re right, shopping around for mortgages is, well, crucial to getting a good deal. Variable interest rates can be scary though.

Hi Jugs,

although I haven?t looked into the small print…yet…I know that Halifax Espa?a and Halifax UK do not charge for transfers etc between Halifax bank accounts.  So if you open an account with Halifax in the UK and one with the Halifax here and use that to transfer your savings you may save on the bank charges…...however…there is no such thing as a free lunch…...so check out where they are planning to re-coup the charges (poor exchange rates maybe?)

Hope this helps

That’s a really good point! I’m checking out the option of opening an account with ING Direct both in Canada and in Spain in order to try to transfer money between the two without paying high charges on the transfers. Not sure how their exchange rates look yet, but I’m hoping they’re good.
