I have lived in Spain now for 40 yrs. I retired 20 yrs ago and since then have lived in the Costa del Sol. Before that I spent my working life between Latin America and my Spanish base.

Before I get too old to do so I would like to move away from the touristy areas of Spain and maybe live in a small town where I hear Spanish rather than English spoken and feel like I am living in a foreign country rather than part of the UK. When I was working I spoke Spanish pretty fluently and have to admit that nowadays my Spanish is fast disappearing as the majority of people I am in contact with speak English. Even the girls in the local supermarket speak a little.

I lived 8 yrs in Menorca in the good old days and short periods in Madrid and Barcelona. I would not consider moving to either of these two cities but would like to find somewhere smaller with character. As I do not know the rest of Spain as I should I would really welcome suggestions based on personal experiences living in a small town in real Spain. I will consider any area.

I look forward to hearing from those of you who may have discovered some place that would be of interest to me.

I like Tortosa and the entire Costa Brava. Aguilas near Alicante is nice too (great beach). Lots and lots of places up north in the Basque country et al that would probably fulfill your hopes as well.
