How long can I drive in Spain with my California DL before I need to have a Spanish DL?  I know in Germany I can transfer it automatically to a German one but not sure about Spain.
Thanks

YOu can drive up to one year provided you have an international driving permit. (Not to be confused with an International Drivers License—which do not exist). In the USA, go to AAA, pay 20 dollars, have your pic taken and the permit issued. The permit is just a translation of your license. When driving in Europe you need both in order to be considered license. Don’t get caught without either when driving—the fines are HUGE!

Dennis is right on about all of that. There are a couple more tidbits on the driving in Spain page however.
