First of all I’m really glad I found this forum. It seems like it could be a lot of help for me in the upcoming months. I’m an American planning on moving to Barcelona for about 1 year. I’ve done some research on work/residence permits, but I’m wondering how mandatory these are. I am a professional poker player, and am planning on following the European Poker Tour around Europe (a weekend once a month or so), and want to have my home base be in Barcelona, where I would spend a majority of my down time. As far as a secondary job I was thinking about bartending or waiting tables, would a work permit really be necessary for this type of work? Will I still need a sponsor, or is it feasible to get by in Barcelona without papers for about 1 years time? any help would be greatly appreciated.

You know there are a lot of people who overstay their visa. Ask the English teachers. There are tons of them from the US who stay a few years without a visa, working under the table till someone sponsors their visa or there’s another amnesty. Check around on the forum though, there’s already tons of advice about this issue. 😊

Your situation is simple, without a visa as a US citizen you get 3 month renewable to 3 months, this in counted days that is days you stay in Spain, anyways you better get a visa for a year if your planning that, contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for your paper work, do not work without papers you could be arrested untill deposrted.

Well, that’s true, but in my experience it’s really not as big of a deal as one might think. It’s not like Spain has Homeland Security… 😉
