Can anyone advise me, I live and work here (Granada, Spain) but it is an English company and my rent is cash so I have no national identity number. I am just like a visitor in status. I want to buy a small scooter (100cc or so). I have a full English driving licence which I’m told probably covers riding a scooter? Do you know if a need a NIE number, any further licence, is it difficult to get Insurance and can you advise a specific company….. and anything else?

I’ve only been here a few months so my Spanish is so-so, would I be better to hire a representative to do the paperwork etc?

Any help, advice would be really appreciated. Many thanks! Toby

Hi Tobz,

Yep, you’ll need an NIE to get the matriculation. Once you get this (which you should probably have anyway…), you can take yourself to the local scooter shop, buy a scooter, and they’ll process the paperwork for you for an additional cost of about 100-150 euros as I’ve heard.

Also note that if you process your residency you’ll only have six months before you need to have a Spanish driving licence. Also see Driving Licences in Spain

Ok thats very helpful thanks! I wont be getting residency as i’m just posted over here even though it’s long term, therefore I’ll stick to my UK licence. Do you happen to know if I can get more than a 50cc on a UK licence? I want a 100cc ideally.

Thanks again. Toby

I’m not 100%, but I don’t see why you couldn’t. I think up to 149cc or something like that. I’ve heard conflicting info on these things, so your best bet is to go visit the scooter shop, or preferably shops. Shop around for the info.

When you find out, post back here though, I’d love to know the definitive answer on that one.
