Going Local in Gran Canaria

Posted by Dreamer

A fun, interesting book, Going Local in Gran Canaria by Matthew Hirtes introduces us to the Spanish island in a way that few books have.

Going Local in Gran Canaria is a great read for any English speaker considering a visit or move to Spain’s island of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands archipelago. British expat Matthew Hirtes guides readers through the quirks of the island with a perceptive, on-the-ground quality. The book covers subjects like Food and Climate, provides brief introductions to different areas of the island and lists resources for further investigation.

Though Going Local in Gran Canaria is organized according to topics of interest for potential visitors and residents, the book is more firmly rooted in the author’s affectionate look at different experiences in his adopted home. This is enhanced with the short, often comic accounts from different authors that pepper the book.

Future visitors to Gran Canaria will no doubt find Hirtes’s book a rollicking read full of local color. If I were moving to Gran Canaria, however, I would equate Going Local in Gran Canaria to talking at length with a knowledgeable friend: helpful, but not exhaustive. While most of the time this provides for pleasant reading, in certain cases I wished for a more in-depth or research-based report. The anecdotal section on “Crime” immediately springs to mind.

Still, Going Local in Gran Canaria is a worthwhile read about one of Spain’s oft-overlooked islands, and highly recommended.

Going Local in Gran Canaria. Matthew Hirtes. Great Britain: Summertime Publishing, 2012. 228. Buy the book in Europe or buy the book in North America.
