Streetwise Spanish

Posted by Dreamer

A book designed to help you learn basic Spanish and live in a Spanish-speaking country, Streetwise Spanish by Peter Christian acts as your guide to Spain and covers everything from food to emergencies to love.

Let’s be honest here. Learning a language is tricky, it takes a long time, and it’s just plain hard. Looking back, I’d swear I devoted myself to learning Spanish out of stubbornness and masochism, but thankfully it paid off. Yet since then I just haven’t had the patience to learn another language. I can’t count the number of times I’ve started (and then subsequently stopped) learning French, German, Czech, and Korean. After a certain amount of time I just get frustrated because I can’t even speak like a five year old, so I lose interest and then I quit again. Evil verb conjugations aside, I’d guess that low morale has got to be the number one killer of foreign language competency.

So when it came time for me to review Streetwise Spanish, I procrastinated. Oops, did I just say that out loud? I mean, I know how to speak Spanish and looking at another beginning language book just reminded me of my own failure to competently learn a third language, so reviewing this book didn’t exactly make me want to jump for joy.

However, when I started to actually read the thing – with a beer in hand to weather Madrid’s summer heat no less – I began to wish that there was a Czech version of this.

Streetwise Spanish is a book that teaches you basic Spanish and is written especially for people who plan to live in Spain, but I was surprised to find that it was well written, entertaining, and practical. (This is essentially a textbook after all.) The book contains lots of vocabulary and tips, and the author continually refers to his own mistakes and experiences, helping to build a supportive atmosphere for the mistakes beginning learners will be bound to make in real life.

The book’s real strength is that its excitement about learning a new language and navigating a new country is infectious. That’s not typical beginning language book stuff.

So when exactly is the Czech version coming out, please?
